I have decided to create an alternative to synchtube for a few key reasons. Though I am an inexperienced programmer, I can see a few key reasons for new development to be needed, and that MrChess as a developer has not been keeping synchtube up to date and protected as is proven with the spam and rampant exploits that can be noticed at any time in almost any room.
The grievances are as follows:
insecurity: Bugs have allowed people to take down rooms with spam, make the use of bots almost necesary for the survival of a room. Many inexperienced users will not have the knowledge to run a bot, so this is a terrible fate. In another room I used to regular, there was a mod that was able to create a script that stole the passwords of the users in that room. The ability to run JS is a terrible answer to a lack of customization on the website.
Out of date: Despite there being numerous advances that have happened to the web, synchtube has remained stagnant. There has been a lack of supporting important things that help make sites usable to everyone. As you may be able to tell, you are nearly completely unable to open synchtube on mobile platforms. This is because of the failure to end the use of Adobe's Flash.
Compatibility: This has been touched pretty well in the out of date section, and this is a glaring scar in my opinion for any web based program. Since the web is open to nearly any device, the programs you access on the web should be made to easily communicate with any device that is capable of accessing the web.
This all most obviously relates to you, the users and moderators of normlpeople. I have listed my concerns that have remained unanswered in the time that I have been on synchtube for. What I would like you to do, is to help with various things, trying to communicate with developers you may happen to know, in order to assisst me as a rather inexperienced javascript programmer.
Though you can probably tell that this goal is rather loose and undefined at the moment, I will build this from scratch, and as soon as I get the basic single room model running, I will show it off as a demo so that you may have close involvment in getting the different features of the new alternative implemented. I will be satisfied if I can get any level of support from this room, and I hope for this to become sort of a new and better home for this room.
Please post any questions, comments or concerns that you have regarding this post and I will take my time to answer them.
Mockups for a desktop layout are to come.
